Short answer: because the manufacturer says so, and says what you get for it. After a battery is changed, BMW Group's manuals recommend having the new one registered to the vehicle. Until then, the car may limit comfort features and keep showing warning messages.
What the manuals say
A MINI owner's manual published by BMW Group covers it on page 286.
The manufacturer of the vehicle recommends that you have a dealer's service center or another qualified service center or repair shop register the vehicle battery to the vehicle after the battery has been changed. Once the battery has been registered again, all comfort features will be available without limitation and any Check Control messages displayed which relate to comfort features will disappear.
A BMW X3 owner's manual says the same in one sentence.
After a battery replacement, have the battery registered on the vehicle by the service center to ensure that all comfort features are fully available and that any Check Control messages of these comfort features are no longer displayed.
Both are US English editions, so check the manual that came with your own car. Note who the MINI manual names: a dealer's service centre or another qualified service center or repair shop.

The battery has to be the right one
Registration is the second step. The first is fitting a battery the car is designed for. This is the MINI manual's warning on page 285.
Vehicle batteries that are not compatible can damage vehicle systems and impair vehicle functions.
It follows with the instruction.
Only vehicle batteries that are compatible with your vehicle type should be installed in your vehicle.
So a battery that merely fits the tray is not enough.
What wears a battery out
The same manual says the battery is maintenance-free, and then explains what works against it.
The following circumstances can have a negative effect on the performance of the battery: Frequent short-distance drives. Stationary periods of more than one month.
That describes a lot of city cars: short trips, then days parked.
If you charge it yourself
The manual is specific about where a charger connects.
Only connect battery chargers for the vehicle battery to the jump-start terminals in the engine compartment.
The reason it gives is that chargers connected through sockets or cigarette lighters in the vehicle may overload or damage the 12 V electrical system.
After the power has been off
Disconnecting a battery has side effects the manual lists. Some equipment needs to be initialised again or have its settings updated: the stored memory positions, the time and date, and the glass sunroof.
It also affects servicing records. The manual says stationary periods during which the battery was disconnected are not taken into account by the service system, which is one of the subjects of our post on how your car decides when it needs a service.
How we handle it
Battery testing and replacement is on the list of what we do for BMW owners, and we work on MINI as well. If your car needs a new battery, or you are not sure whether the last one was registered, contact us and we will talk it through with you.
Every car is different, so we quote on the car rather than from a list. Send us the year, model and rego along with what it needs, and we will put a tailored quote together.
